In Feng Shui, one of the key areas that I focus on during a consultation is the bedroom. It is considered the most important room of the house because it is where we spend one third of our lives. It is the place where we regenerate our chi. When we sleep, our defenses are down and our aim is to refill on nourishing chi for the next day. I always suggest that clients try to concentrate on one area at a time when they Feng Shui their homes and the bedroom is a great place to start because you will feel the effects almost immediately.
Here are some tips that will encourage the accumulation of good chi and therefore a good night’s sleep.
First let’s talk about the most relevant object in the room, the bed.
Locate your bed against a solid wall and do not place it in line with the bedroom door or under a beam. A "commanding position" is a Feng Shui term which means the person can see the door, most of the room and is not in a vulnerable position.
Avoid using a second-hand bed. These may carry with them residual energies of past experiences. Don't let other peoples problems become yours. Find other ways to recycle. Above all never use a second-hand mattress. This is because it is softer and more absorbent than the bed frame itself. These also come in closer contact to personal energies in a more intimate way. Hard surfaces don’t absorb energies of others as much as soft ones do.
Choose a bed that is made primarily out of natural materials. Synthetic materials may contain toxic chemical that can be harmful. Try and eliminate all artificial and toxic materials from the entire bedroom as well as keep electronic items to a minimum. This bed should also be extremely comfortable and supportive to your body frame and especially your spine.
Make sure your bedroom is just a bedroom and not an office or a gym. When we go to bed we do not want to be reminded of work or working out, If your bedroom is large enough and you have no other place for it than at least try to section the area out of view with a screen or partition.
Many master bedrooms nowadays contain an en-suite bathroom. This is a bathroom that is directly connected to the bedroom. These pose no problems as long as there is a door between the bedroom and bathroom which should be closed especially when you go to bed. If your master bedroom does not have a door to separate it from a master bathroom or sinks, use a drape, partition or curtain to block the negative bathroom energy out and keep the beneficial energy from going down the drain.
While we are talking about bathrooms, if you have a cat’s litter box, keep it in the bathroom or laundry room. Never keep a litter box in your bedroom. The negative frequencies from it can be detrimental to your health.
Mirrors in bedrooms more often than not create sleeping problems. They cause the chi to bounce around and become too active for such a yin space. If you cannot replace your mirrored wardrobe doors try to soften the effects by using a frosting treatment.
Clutter in the bedroom is associated with fatigue, irritability and not feeling rested in the morning. The irritability also comes from not being able to find things and stubbing your toe on too much furniture or boxes so keep your bedroom free of clutter to allow beneficial chi to flow freely.
Make your bedroom a sanctuary and do not offer it to guests. Keep it private and avoid too many yang colors which can increase heart rate. The use of screens, soft lighting, net curtains and transparent blinds will create an air of tranquility.
Air is still free. Open your windows and let fresh air in daily. The bedroom especially needs this air and chi to avoid that stuffy or stagnant feeling. This will allow beneficial chi to circulate and stagnant chi to dissolve.
